Can I claim an exemption from jury duty if I am a college student?
Q. I live in Texas -- Potter County. Jury Duty would not cause me to miss class, but possibly miss class work if the trial went more than a day. Is the exemption only valid if it would cause you to be absent from school? Because in my case it would not. Please let me know, thanks!

A. Yes, exactly for that reason; the trial may go on being longer and make you miss school, and they don't want that.

How long does it take to get jury duty?
Q. I know most people do everything they can to get out of jury duty, but I have never been and I want to go. I am 22 years old and have never been requested to go. I registered to vote as soon as I turned 18 so why haven't I been asked yet?

A. I feel as unlucky as you. People who say you are lucky not to serve or who try to get out to jury duty are a bunch of naive bystanders that complain about the process, but aren't willing to be part of the process. I find that when I when I want to get the summons, I hardly ever get it. I was on a criminal case 6 years ago which was an amazing experience to be part of. Since then I was summoned 2 years ago but never got on a case. Maybe if you like all the other nonintellectuals that try to stray away from jury service, you might get a summons.

what happens if i were to skip jury duty?
Q. I live in Los Angeles. I have to report to jury duty this upcoming week, but would like to skip it or postpone it for a later date. I have a non emergency that will prevent me from attending. I have already used my extension from a previous date! What are the consequences for a no show?

A. consequences for a no show is a warrant for your arrest. just go to jury duty. we are all americans and that is part of being an american. jury duty should be just as important as whatever else you have to do that day. it's not like they told you the day before so you've had time to make arrangements.
